AMALGAM (FABRIC, FALCON, FENCING) BRAVE exercises are
Commander in Charge, NORAD (CINCNORAD)-sponsored,
region-directed Field Training Exercises (FTXs) that take place in the
Canadian, CONUS and Alaskan NORAD regions, respectively. One of the
primary purposes of these exercises is to fulfill a CINCNORAD
requirement to periodically
deploy
fighter assets and conduct air operations from the Region's Deployed
Operating Bases (DOB), flexible alert sites and Forward Operating
Locations (FOL). The specific NORAD region determines the conduct of
each exercise with inputs, guidance and assistance provided by HQ NORAD.
There are six AFB exercises scheduled each year.

Between the 10th and 18th of May, Alaskan Air Command (AAC) hosted
Amalgam Brave 87, the largest NORAD exercise ever held in Alaska.
|
|
March 3-5, 1998 off the West Coast of British Columbia and the United
States
“Exercise Amalgam Fabric Brave 98-1" was conducted. This exercise, which
involved military units from both Canada and the United States
Air Force, incorporated North American Air Defense (NORAD)
resources in evaluating air sovereignty plans for the defense of these
countries against potential hostile
actions.

This exercise required Canadian military personnel from numerous units,
including 414 (Combat Support) Squadron from Comox, 434 (Combat Support)
Squadron from Greenwood, 416 Tactical Flying Squadron and 42 Radar
Squadron from 4 Wing Cold Lake to deploy and defend against these
attacks. 42 Radar Squadron was deployed to the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG)
site at Ucluelet, B.C. to provide offshore radar coverage during the
exercise. The TPS-70 3D phased array radar operated by the unit is
capable of detecting up to 500 aircraft to an altitude of 100,000 feet
and a range of 240 nautical miles.

|
The 36 men and women who operate and maintain the Squadron radar and
ancillary equipment resided in the Ucluelet area during the exercise.
The Squadron was host to local representatives, schools and interested
personnel through pre-arranged tours of the Squadron equipment during
the Exercise
