McChord Air Force Base - The cause of the crash of an F-106 Delta Dart jet fighter Wednesday in a desolate area about 25 miles south of the town of Neah Bay is still unknown, according to base officials.

The pilot, Capt. Webb H. Huss, Jr., of XXXXX N. Xxxxxx St. SW., ejected himself from the craft and parachuted safely into Lake Ozette. He was plucked from the lake by a powerboat and later returned to McChord in a helicopter from Paine Field.

Huss is a member of the 318th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.

McChord officials said that they lost radio and radar contact with Huss who was on a routine training flight about noon.

Huss was rescued from the lake in a matter of minutes, according to officials, and immediately signaled that he was all right to Capt Charles Shaut, who had accompanied him in another F-10. Shaut then radioed to McChord.

Only Capt. Huss knows the identity of his rescuer, the base information office said, and he was not available for comment at present. The office said it was trying to contact the boater for an official show of application from the base.

Plans are under way to remove the crashed plane for study and for the board of inquiry to be called to investigate the incident.

51 years after its crash, the remains of s/n 56-0464 was uncovered by a logging crew preparing to harvest private forestry property in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State in mid July of 2015
